Thorolf Holmboe (born May 10, 1866 in Vefsn , † March 7, 1935 in Oslo ) was a Norwegian landscape and marine painter and craftsman .

life and work

Holmboe was a master student of Hans Fredrik Gude in Berlin in 1886/1887 . He then worked for the sculptor Middelthun at the Royal School of Arts and Crafts in Kristiania . In the years 1889/1890 he studied with Cormon in Paris . In 1887 he made his debut at the annual exhibition in Kristiania with Nordlands landscapes. Holmboe left naturalism around 1890 and joined the decorative-stylizing art direction. This neo-romantic trend determined his work as a painter and craftsman. In the years 1891 and 1893 Holmboe was a state scholarship holder in Italy . He then went on trips to Berlin, Copenhagen , Paris and Stockholm . In 1908 he was in Svalbard . In 1909 he decorated the Norwegian section of the international hunting exhibition in Vienna . Around 1915, Holmboe turned to Impressionism . In 1919 he went to New York City . In 1920 Holmboe was on the French Riviera . In 1922 he was on Rügen .
