automaten is a song by the Swiss band mittageisen , which was first released in January 1985 as a maxi / 12 '' version (LUNA-MB 8501), with an electro sound that was new for the time. “Automaten” became the record of the week in the rock show Sounds! of the Swiss radio DRS 3 . As a result, the single found its way into the legendary John Peel Show on BBC Radio 1 and became an indie disco hit.

Due to its success, a 7 '' version (LUNA MB 8505) was released a few months later. On the back of the 12 "as well as the 7" version is the instrumental piece "New China". The piece was produced by Bruno W and his label LUNA-MB-MUSIK, today mital-U .

Both versions were re-released in 2008 on the double CD mittageisen 1983–1986 remastered (mital-U).

For Record Stored Day on April 16, 2016, the label mital-U re-released the maxi single "automaten" as a limited and numbered 12 "vinyl record (U-7C0-V1).

Emergence

The piece was written after Markus Sch (guitar) left and Manuela H (synthesizer) moved in at the same time, as part of the musical reorientation of mittageisen. The music is from mittageisen and the text by Bruno W. As Bruno W explained in a radio interview, the piece was originally recorded and mixed in a different version. However, the group was dissatisfied with this final version, and so Bruno W drove the tapes to Tom Dokoupil ( The Wirtschaftswunder ) and Detlev Kühne to Cologne, in whose on-line studios the voice was re-recorded and the song was remixed together.

content

The ambiguous text that is typical for lunch is explained by the chorus line “Work - only for automata”. Which, according to Bruno W, does not primarily mean machines when “automaten” is used, but rather, as can be seen from the full text, above all people who work like robots.
