Mittageisen was a dark wave group from Switzerland from the early 1980s .
history
The name refers to a song by Siouxsie and the Banshees (released as a single in 1979), which in turn is based on the photomontage Hurray, the Butter is All! is inspired by John Heartfield from 1934. This picture was used as the title page for the Arbeiter Illustrierte Zeitung of December 19, 1935. Heartfield (1891–1968) was an early member of Club Dada , which started as Cabaret Voltaire in Zurich in 1916 . The picture with the original title Hurray, the butter is all shows a family that consumes iron. The trigger for this was the following sentence in a Göring speech: "Ore has always made an empire strong, butter and lard have at most made one people fat."
The group was initiated in 1981 by Bruno Waser (synthesizer, vocals) after various activities in the field of punk music (including the production of the first Swiss punk LP "CRAZY"). The two other founding members Daniel S (guitar) and Markus Sch (guitar, voice) were also active in punk bands up to this point. Shortly after the founding, Ursula S completed the group as bassist, but left midday before the first album was recorded in autumn 1982. Before midday iron recorded a demo tape with six tracks, some of which were re-recorded and released on the first album.
In addition to various concerts, among others with bands such as Liliput , The Vyllies and Propaganda , lunch break became one of the most prominent Swiss New Wave bands , mainly through the release of their first album in March 1983 . Her album was record of the week on the Swiss radio program Sounds and was often played on radio stations in Germany and Holland.
Mittageisen developed its own original style of music in which, according to critics, influences from Joy Division , early The Cure and The Velvet Underground can be recognized. In addition to the music, the German-language, expressive lyrics by Bruno Waser were particularly convincing.
After the departure of Markus Sch and the addition of Manuela H (synthesizer), the group released the maxi single automaten in January 1985 with an electro sound that was new for the time. The single found its way into the John Peel show on BBC Radio 1 and became an indie disco hit.
After the last recordings, the group was disbanded in 1986 due to "musical differences". A few years later, Bruno Waser published the single geld --arbeit under the name mittageisen v2 , which was published in two editions with different versions. In the second edition he was supported by Marco Repetto ( gray area ), with whom he and Paul Ott published the fanzine “Sondernummer” in the early 1980s.
influence
In 2016, fashion designer Julia Seemann (who worked for Vivienne Westwood and Meadham Kirchhoff in London, among others ) created the 2016 Capsule Collection as a tribute to Mittageisen . The collection was presented at London Fashion Week 2016.
The skateboarders of The Straight and Narrow produced in 2016 in connection with the re-release of the 12 " machines a skate video with excerpts from various Mittageisen songs.
In 2014 “ automaten ” was named one of the top 20 songs of the 'CH Hall of Fame 80s' at the exhibition' Oh Yeah! - Pop Music in Switzerland 'presented at the Museum for Communication, Bern.
