The Avery GmbH (until 30 June 2013: Avery Dennison Office Products Europe GmbH ) is a German office products manufacturer based in Oberlaindern in the Upper Bavarian village of Valley in Munich . Together with the closely related CCL Label GmbH in nearby Holzkirchen, it belongs to the Canadian CCL Industries . The name "Zweckform" is one of the best known German brand names.

The German market mainly offers form books for use in the office, printer labels and printable foils for various applications. In addition, there are labeling devices and stickers, which as niche products are only of subordinate importance.

history

The German predecessor company was founded in 1946 in a former cowshed by Hermann Steinbeis and Paul Nordmann as Zweckform Schreibwaren und Bürobedarfs GmbH . The company initially produced form and carbon copy books very successfully. In 1949, Zweckform achieved sales of over DM 1 million and employed 121 people.

Zweckform receipt pad, around 1950

The best-selling product from this period was the receipt pad 300, of which over 30 million copies have been sold since 1954. Due to its widespread use, the company name Zweckform soon became the epitome of aids in everyday office life in Germany.

In 1956 the company signed a license agreement with the American label manufacturer Avery and marketed its products on the European market. From 1958 the company successfully positioned itself as the market leader for labels in Germany. In 1982 the labeling technology moved to a new plant in nearby Holzkirchen. Four years later, the two business areas of office supplies and labels were organizationally separated into Zweckform Büroprodukte GmbH and Zweckform Etikettenechnik GmbH. At that time, Zweckform was one of the largest employers in the region.

In 1999, both business areas were taken over by the Californian labeling technology group Avery Dennison . However, the labeling technology was spun off as Steinbeis Packaging Group just one year later and sold to the Canadian group CCL Industries in 2005 , which renamed the newly acquired business branch to CCL Label. In 2011, an average of 231 employees were employed in this area, with sales of EUR 40.5 million.

The office supplies division remained with Avery Dennison and from then on operated under two different names under the common umbrella of Avery Dennison Europe Holding (Deutschland) GmbH & Co.KG, namely Avery Dennison Zweckform Office Products Europe GmbH for sales and Avery Dennison Zweckform Office Products Manufacturing GmbH for production. The total of 312 employees generated sales of around EUR 33 million in 2011.

After the sale of the office supplies division to the conglomerate 3M in 2012 failed due to objection from the antitrust authorities , CCL has now also acquired the office supplies division, which has since been known as Avery Zweckform GmbH and thus became a sister company of labeling technology for the second time.
