Avochie Castle

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Avochie Castle is the ruin of a tower block about 7 km north of Huntly and east of the River Deveron in the Scottish county of Aberdeenshire . The building dates from the 16th or early 17th century.

The modern Avochie House is just west of it.

history

The property originally belonged to the Gordon clan of Avochie, who were involved in the conflict between Mary Queen of Scots and her son James VI. committed.

In 1871 it belonged to Adam Hay Gordon .

architecture

The gable walls with a crowd watchtower on consoles in the southeast is all that has been preserved from the residential tower.

It is said that the building can hardly be called a “castle” because it is just a small, rectangular building with barely two floors. Its footprint is 13.5 meters × 6.3 meters.

Historic Scotland has listed Avochie Castle as a Category B Historic Building.
