The Avon Wilderness Park is an almost undeveloped and untouched area in the south of the Australian Alps in Victoria . It is one of the eleven Alpine National Parks and Reserves that were included in the Australian National Heritage List .
The 39,650 hectare park has been protected since 1987 and there are giant eucalyptus and subalpine forests growing in it . There are no hiking or driving paths and no accommodation options in the park. People entering the park must be well equipped and prepared. Hiking is possible and access to the park is via Licola . Fish can also be caught, skiing and canoeing can be enjoyed. Because of its remote and inaccessible location, the park is used for adventure hikes, rock climbing and nature experiences. In summer it is very hot and dry, in winter snow falls in the higher elevations.
Hiking is mapped on the Razorback and Purgatory Spurs and along the main valleys of the Avon River and Turton River , and at the end of the Wellington Plateau can be climbed.
This park is managed by Parks Victoria alongside Big Desert Wilderness Park and Wabba Wilderness Park .
Close to Avon Wilderness Park are the Grant Historic Area , Howqua Hills Historic Area and Mount Buffalo National Park .
On November 7, 2008, the park was added to the Australian National Heritage List .
The Aborigines of Gunai consider the area of Avon Wilderness Park as their traditional lands.
