The Roe I is a biplane - aircraft of the British aircraft designer Alliott Verdon Roe .
history
This aircraft was Roe's first own design, based on the work of the Wright brothers . Only one machine of this type was manufactured in a stable near Putney .
In September 1907 the machine was brought to Brooklands Racecourse in Surrey . The Daily Mail had put a price of £ 2,500 for the first circumnavigation of the circuit. Due to the low engine power, the aircraft did not take off. Roe borrowed a more powerful Antoinette engine from Société Antoinette and changed the propeller. On June 8, 1908, a few jumps were made.
Racetrack officials dropped the plane while attempting to put the plane over a bridle in Brooklands. It broke apart and couldn't be repaired. The remains were eventually dismantled.
construction
The machine was a fabric-covered wooden structure. The undersides of the wings were planked with wood to improve aerodynamics . The only control element was an elevator on the front of the wings, an elevator or rudder unit did not exist; thus only a straight flight was possible. The Roe I had a wheel chassis consisting of four small wheels on two axles. A JAP motor with 9 HP (6.6 kW ), which acted on a compressed air screw , originally served as the drive .
