Avui

Avui ( Catalan for Today ) was a Catalan daily newspaper based in Barcelona that appeared throughout Catalonia and at times in other Catalan-speaking regions of Spain such as the Balearic Islands and Valencia .

Avui was founded in 1976 on the initiative of Jaume Vilalta i Gonzàlez, Josep Maria Puig i Salellas and Josep Espar i Ticó, as the first Catalan-language daily newspaper after the end of Franquism . In 2009 it was taken over by the publishing house Hermes Comunicacions , which also published El Punt . With effect from July 31, 2011, Avui merged with this to form the Catalan-language daily newspaper with the highest circulation, El Punt Avui .

The political orientation of the newspaper can be described as Catalan and liberal-democratic , especially during the first years of its publication it was close to the party Convergència Democràtica de Catalunya .
