El Punt Avui is a Catalan daily newspaper that was created through the merger of the daily newspapers El Punt (The Point) and Avui (Today) with effect from July 31, 2011. There is a paper and an online edition, each with an edition for Catalonia and a regional edition for the comarca (region) of Girona .

According to market research from July 2010 to June 2011, the newspaper expects 295,000 readers a day and is hoping for an annual growth rate of 6.1%. The electronic edition is expected to have 640,000 readers per month.

Presentation, content and design correspond to those of the merger partners, the daily sports section has been slightly changed, the former sports supplement will appear as an independent daily newspaper from August 14, 2011. The headquarters and the editorial office for Girona are located in the former Farinera Teixidor , a listed building by the architect Rafael Masó i Valentí .

Emergence

In November 2009, El Punt , which belongs to the Hermes Comunicacions media group, acquired 100 percent of the shares in Avui, which had belonged to the Corporació Catalana de Comunicació group since 2004 . This was the first major newspaper company in the Catalan language .

Intention of the merger on 31 July 2011 El Punt Avui was, among other things, behind La Vanguardia and El Periodico to move up the circulation in Catalonia to third place. A major reason is likely to have been economic difficulties with regard to the number of advertisements and the number of copies, which led to staff reductions.
