Awbere (also Aw Barre , Au Barre ; Amharic አውበሬ Awberē ) is a place in the Jijiga zone of the Somali region of Ethiopia. It is the capital of the woreda Awbere and is located near the border with northern Somalia / Somaliland at an altitude of around 1550 m.

According to the Central Statistics Agency of Ethiopia for 2005, Awbere had 35,977 inhabitants. In 1997, of 24,125 inhabitants, 64.72% were Somali and 34.83% were foreigners from Somalia.

From 1991 to 2001 there was a refugee camp called Teferi Ber nearby . Housed - as well as the warehouse of Derwonaji - especially members of the Gadabursi- you -Clans from northern Somalia, before fighting between the SNM of Isaaq fled -Clans and local militias. The population was initially up to 98,000, in September 1994 it had dropped to around 41,000, as some of the refugees returned after the situation had calmed down and local Somali who had mixed with the refugees were excluded through checks. On June 30, 2001, Derwonaji and Teferi Ber were closed because most of the refugees had returned on their own or through organized return programs.

In 2007, the UNHCR reopened a camp near Awbere to accommodate newly arrived refugees from southern and central Somalia. This camp was named Awbere. Another warehouse was added in 2008 in nearby Sheder .
