Derwonaji (also Darwanaji , Dher Wanaje , Derwernache ) is a place in the woreda Awbere in the Jijiga zone of the Somali region in Ethiopia .

According to the Central Statistics Agency of Ethiopia for 2005, Derwonaji had 35,645 inhabitants. In 1997, of the 23,891 inhabitants, 67.47% were native Somali and 31.02% were foreigners from Somalia .

In 1991 a refugee camp for refugees from Northern Somalia / Somaliland was set up in Derwonaji . Most of the residents belonged to the Gadabursi- Dir clan and had fled fighting between the SNM and local militias around Boorama . The camp also housed Jidwaq and Ogadeni- Darod and members of the Gaboye minority, and there were a number of Ethiopian Somali among the residents. As a result of reviews of the residents and the return of Somalis, the population fell from over 100,000 at the beginning to below 40,000 in mid-1994, at the end of 1998 it was still around 27,000. The camp was closed on June 30, 2001.
