Axel Esbensen
Axel Esbensen (* 1878 in Denmark ; † January 1, 1923 in Stockholm ) was a Danish film architect and the leading set designer in the heyday of Swedish cinema.
Live and act
The merchant's son initially chose his father's profession and was hired as a sales assistant by the Swedish department store chain Nordiska Kompaniet in Stockholm in 1907 . From mid-April 1909 to the end of November 1915, Esbensen served as an interpreter for German, English and French. He then got a job as a film architect from the production company AB Svenska Biografteatern.
Over the next six years, Esbensen designed the sets for a plethora of Swedish silent films, including several classics. The Dane created his best spatial designs for the productions of the leading film directors of the country of his time, Mauritz Stiller and Victor Sjöström ( Terje Vigen , Der Fuhrmann des Todes ). For Stiller's masterpiece Mr. Arnes Schatz , Esbensen designed the costumes in 1919 and also served as a prop master . Esbensen committed in 1923 on New Year's suicide ; this act was preceded by a violent argument with Stiller at a New Year's Eve party.
