Axel Paulsen (born July 18, 1855 in Kristiania (now Oslo ), Norway , † 1938 ) was a figure skater and inventor of one of the most difficult figure skating jumps named after him - the Axel .

Life

At the age of 16, he was a big surprise at the competitions in Kristiania in 1870. 15 years later he got the title of the best competitor in the world (English Champion of the World ). In the meantime he had made a name for himself in figure skating history in several competitions .

But he became most famous for his particularly difficult jump, which he still jumped on the speed skating runners and which is still one of the most difficult jumps in figure skating. At the first international figure skating competitions, which took place in Vienna in 1882 , this did not help him to victory. He was only third behind the Austrians Leopold Frey and Eduard Engelmann .

Nowadays the exceptional ice skater is only known as a figure skater, but the inventor of one of the most difficult figure skating jumps also won on long runners. He drove a hundred English miles (160.9 km) in 9:30 hours. As the first European he went to North America , where he defeated the best speed skaters in Canada and the USA in the ten-mile run.
