Axel Werner (born August 21, 1964 in Bonn ) is a German Catholic theologian. From April 2002 to April 2011 he was General Praeses of the International Kolping Society and in this office he was the eighth successor to Adolph Kolping .

Life

Werner attended the Gottfried-Kinkel-Grundschule in Bonn-Oberkassel from 1970, in 1974 he switched to the Ernst-Kalkuhl-Gymnasium in Bonn-Oberkassel, where he acquired the skills needed to study. In 1983 he enrolled at the University of Bonn , where he studied Catholic theology. After completing his studies in 1988, he became a deacon in Kaarst- Vorst and Kaarst-Holzbüttgen in 1989 .

On June 1, 1990, he was ordained a priest in Cologne Cathedral , was chaplain in Cologne-Urbach and Cologne-Grengel from 1990 , in 1993 he went to Sankt Augustin-Ort ( St. Maria Königin ) and Sankt Augustin - Hangelar ( St. . Anna ), became pastor in Quito in 1995 and pastor in Mexico City in 1998 . On April 29, 2002, the International Kolping Society elected him General Praeses . On June 23, 2002 he was introduced as rector of the Minorite Church in Cologne and on September 19, 2003 he was appointed Monsignor ("Chaplain to His Holiness").

Werner was general president of the International Kolping Society for nine years. On February 9, 2011, he wrote to the members to announce his resignation on May 1, 2011 in order to “then take on another responsible task as a priest of the Archdiocese of Cologne .” Since September 1, 2012, Axel Werner was pastor of the parish of Sankt Servatius in Siegburg, from 2013 also district dean in the Rhein-Sieg district . For health reasons, he asked to be released from his offices in May 2015 and was released by Archbishop Rainer Maria Woelki on August 15, 2015 at his request to take on pastoral duties in the Chulucanas diocese in Perú. There he works for the diocesan radio "Emmanuel" and is a lecturer for Catholic social teaching in the lay apostolate, as well as pastor for the base communities "Comunidades de Base" of the diocese. In addition, he took over the spiritual direction of the Kolping Families there and is a pastor at the Cathedral of Chulucanas. He collected donations in Germany to repair the damage caused by the “ El Niño ” climate phenomenon that occurred in his diocese.
