Axinotarsus pulicarius , also known as the small warthog beetle , is a beetle from the subfamily of the tip beetle (Malachiinae). Along with A. marginalis and A. ruficollis, Axinotarsus pulicarius isone of three species of the genus Axinotarsus that occur in Central Europe.
features
The elongated beetles reach a length between 3 and 3.7 mm. The beetles have a black basic color. The forehead is light yellow, the side edges of the pronotum reddish and the tips of the wing covers yellowish-red. The beetles have fine, lying hair. The antennae are red-brown. The first antenna segment is a little darker than the rest. The females are less slender. In contrast to the males, the abdomen of the females protrudes beyond the rear end of the elytra.
Similar species
- A. marginalis - the beetles are smaller; anterior and middle tibiae lighter in color
- A. ruficollis - the pronotum is solid red in color
distribution
Axinotarsus pulicarius is widespread in Europe. The distribution area extends from the Iberian Peninsula and Italy across Central Europe to southern Scandinavia. The species is locally represented in southern England. In the east, the occurrence extends to the Caucasus .
Way of life
The beetles can be found on flowering grasses, especially on woolly honeydew grass ( Holcus lanatus ) and common ball grass ( Dactylus glomerata ). There they suck on pollen. The flight time lasts from May to July.
