Life

Utami grew up in Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia . At the University of Indonesia in Jakarta, she studied Russian and literature and achieved a bachelor's degree . Utami himself was banned from working. She continued to work as a journalist in the underground and was anonymous author of a black book on corruption under the Suharto family system.

Utami's first novel Saman was published in her homeland a few weeks before the fall of Suharto in 1998 and was honored by Kunstrat Jakartas that same year. In 2000 the work received the Dutch Prince Claus Prize . In 2001 Utami's second novel Larung followed, and in 2008 the novel Pengadilan Susila .

In 2004 Utami took part in the Berlin International Literature Festival and could be heard in the Berlin Literature Salon on Kollwitzplatz . In 2014 she was a radio journalist for the only independent radio station Kantor Berita Radio 68H (Radio 68H) to be heard in all of Indonesia , also a journalist and co-editor of the cultural magazine Kalam and she wrote for the Utan Kayu Theater in the Utan Kayu Art Center in Jakarta.
