The cichlid was not scientifically described until 1993 by Ad Konings , the author of several scientific books on the cichlids in Lake Malawi . The fish was introduced in the mid-1970s.

The animals have a maximum body length of 20 cm and are very fond of swimming, which should be taken into account when choosing the pool size (from 150 cm). Depending on their origin and keeping conditions, the young animals begin to change color from 5 cm.

The male animals are named after the steel-blue coloration, while the females are rather inconspicuously brown. Lately , fish with white pallor that have been produced by breeding selection have also appeared in the trade . These animals are called "Iceberg Ahli".

In their natural environment the animals feed on fish and small invertebrates, in the aquarium they are greedy omnivores. The offspring of Azurcichliden in the aquarium is possible, the animals are in females mouthbrooders .
