Ad Konings

Adrianus Franciscus Johannes Marinus Maria Konings (born January 11, 1956 in Roosendaal , Netherlands ) is a Dutch ichthyologist . His research focus is on the cichlids (Cichlidae).

Life

As a fourteen-year-old student, Konings began keeping cichlids in the aquarium . From 1974 he studied biomedicine at the Universiteit van Amsterdam , where he passed his doctorate in 1980. From 1980 to 1986 he carried out molecular biological research on lysosomal enzymes at the Erasmus University Rotterdam . In 1986 Konings moved to Germany, where he lived with his partner Gertrud and their two daughters in St. Leon-Rot near Heidelberg . He also worked for 18 months at the Department of Parasitology at Heidelberg University . Konings is one of the world's best known experts on the cichlid fauna of Lake Malawi and Lake Tanganyika. He is the first descriptor or co-describer of numerous species of cichlids, including Sciaenochromis fryeri , Chindongo saulosi , Chindongo demasoni , Maylandia estherae , Copadichromis trewavasae , Copadichromis azureus and the genera Mchenga and Chindongo .

Dedication names

The cichlid species Aulonocara koningsi , Placidochromis koningsi and Metriaclima koningsi (from Lake Malawi) and Hemibates koningsi from Lake Tanganyika are named after Konings . Konings named the species Aulonocara gertrudae after his wife.
