The Bâlea Lake (also Bulea Lake , Romanian Lacul Balea , Romanian place name also Bâlea Lac , Hungarian Bilea-tó ) is a glacial lake in the Romanian Carpathians .
location
The lake is located in the Făgăraș Mountains on the Transfogarascher Hochstrasse ( Transfăgărașan ) between the Negoiu and Moldoveanu mountains , the two highest mountains in the Romanian Carpathians. The lake is around 77 km from Sibiu , 68 km from the city of Făgăraş and 85 km from Curtea de Argeş .
Surroundings
The Transfogarascher Hochstraße can only be used in summer as far as Lake Bâlea. The rest of the time, the lake can only be reached by cable car from the north from the Bâlea Waterfall (Bâlea Cascada).
The area around the lake offers guaranteed snow until June. In addition to small natural slopes around the Bâlea hut, there is also an approx. 10 km long descent to the Bâlea waterfall.
The section of the Transfogaras High Road leading down north from the lake is called the Road to the Clouds , because the serpentine road sometimes seems to end in the clouds over the valley.
Bâlea Hut and Ice Hotel
On a small peninsula in the lake is the managed Bâlea hut, which serves both as a popular excursion destination and as a base for hikes in the surrounding mountains. The first ice hotel in Eastern Europe was built in the immediate vicinity in winter 2006. The hotel, built in the shape of an igloo, can accommodate 16 people.
