Farmer's wife with a cow, Osny (French original title: Paysanne gardant une vache, Osny ), is a painting by the impressionist painter Camille Pissarro from 1883. It belongs to the collection of the Von der Heydt Museum in Wuppertal , which acquired the painting in 1984.

description

The painting shows a young peasant woman holding a cow on a leash. She stands next to the brown and variegated cow, shown in the front, grazing in the left half of the picture, on a cordoned-off pasture. The farmer's wife has her hands that hold the leash on her back. She is shown in profile and is in the right front half of the picture. She wears brown clothes, a hood and a blue apron. The pensive gaze of the farmer's wife goes out of the picture to the front left. The willow looks fresh thanks to the finely graded shades of green. The pasture is separated from the farmers' cultivation areas by an open pasture fence, which divides the picture in the upper third. A farmer with implements shouldered on his right is on the way to the pasture. Here the terrain rises to the farmstead, which is shown cut off at the top of the picture.

The work was created as a plein air painting .

Pissarro's work is executed with glue paint on strong paper on canvas and has the portrait format 81 × 65 cm. The signature is on the lower left: “C. Pissarro 83 ". It bears the inventory number G 1406 of the Wuppertal Von der Heydt Museum.

Pissarro used the motif of a farmer with a cow in other pictures.

Provenance and exhibitions

The provenance of the painting is not fully documented, the following ownership structure is noted in the Von der Heydt Museum's painting index: The Paris gallery Charpentier acquired it on June 3, 1954 at an auction. In 1984 the Von der Heydt Museum acquired the painting with funds from the Von der Heydt Foundation and a grant from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia from the Wolfgang Bauer art dealer in Bremen.

In January 1910, the picture by Paul Durand-Ruel was shown at the exhibition Tableaux et gouaches de C. Pissarro in his gallery in Paris, as well as in Cologne in 2012 at Impressionism: Pastels, Watercolors, Drawings and 2014/2015 at Pissarro - The Father of Impressionism in Wuppertal.
