The Böttingerhaus , sometimes also called Prellshaus , is a city palace located on Judenstrasse in the mountain town of Bamberg . It is one of the most important baroque bourgeois buildings in southern Germany.

history

The building was commissioned by the Privy Councilor and District Director's envoy Johann Ignaz Michael Tobias Böttinger and built in 1707-13. The building, based on the model of Italian palazzi , impressively showed contemporaries the prosperity of the bourgeois builder and can serve as a classic example of the rise of this segment of the population in the 18th century.

In addition to the Böttingerhaus, Böttinger's possessions and buildings include the Villa Concordia (Böttingerhaus 2) in Bamberg, his property on Milchweg, the Böttinger country house in Stegaurach and the small castle in Kolmsdorf .

The draftsman of the city palace has not been handed down in writing, which is why only stylistically critical of the architects working in the city and its vicinity can be inferred. While parts of the literature see Maximilian von Welsch as the architect, more recent research tends towards the hitherto rather unknown Johann Ammon .

The facade had to be laboriously fitted into the cramped conditions of the city plan, which was a particular challenge for the architect. The eleven-axis façade is divided into a main building with five and two auxiliary buildings each with three axes. The latter jump back to the southeast, roughly following the curve of the Unterer Stephansberg street.

In addition to the vertical structure of the facade for topographical reasons, the decoration also had to be adapted to the cramped space conditions with little natural light. While traditionally decorating the main floor , so usually the first floor, fails at the most, and then lying with each floor above decreases, it takes in the case of Böttinger house with each floor, and even in the present structures of the dormers gradually increases.

The interior of the house is also characterized by an imposing staircase, lavishly furnished rooms and a decorated courtyard. The rich stucco decorations were created by Johann Jakob Vogel , who was often active in Bamberg at the time , the paintings are by Johann Georg Bogner and Johann Jakob Gebhard. A special feature of the building is the connection with the garden, the terraces of which can be accessed from every floor of the rear wing.

An art gallery has been located in the building since 1992, so it is no longer open to the public.
