Büchelturm in Sankt Vith

The Büchelturm in Sankt Vith , a Belgian municipality in the province of Liège , was built in 1350. The fortified tower has been a protected cultural monument since 1956 .

The round book tower made of quarry stone is the last remnant of the former city wall of Sankt Vith. It was built by Johann von Valkenburg with seven towers. The only visible openings are today's entrance and a pointed arched passage to the former battlement at the height of the first floor. There are arched vaults on both floors.

A red sandstone slab is attached above the entrance with the inscription:

“I AM CALLED BÜCHELTURM. BUILT AROUND 1350, I SANDED IN 1689. DAMAGED BY BOMBS IN 1944 RESTORED IN 1961. "

The Büchelturm, restored in 1961, is a landmark of the city of Sankt Vith.
