Goodall Edward Gondwe (born December 1, 1936 in Kayiwonanga ) is a Malawian economist and politician ( Democratic Progressive Party ).

Life

Gondwe was born in 1936 in the northern Malawian village of Kayiwonanga, near Mzimba . He studied at the University of London . He completed his studies with a Bachelor of Science.

He worked for the International Monetary Fund for 22 years , including as director for the Africa region.

He was Vice President of the African Development Bank (AfEB), including interim president between 1979 and 1980, a time when both Africa and the AfEB were heavily influenced by the oil price crisis in 1973 and 1979/1980.

He began his political career as an economic advisor to President Bakili Muluzi , followed by ministerial duties under President Bingu wa Mutharika .

He has been a member of the Malawi government since 2002. He was also elected to parliament in 2005 as a member of Mzimba. As finance minister from 2004 to June 2009, Malawi managed to push inflation from 30% in 2005 to 6% in 2008 and to boost economic growth to 6%. After the May 19, 2009 elections, he was appointed Minister in charge of Local Government and Rural Development by Bingu wa Mutharika in June 2009, which he was until August 2010.

On August 1, 2011, he was elected Vice President of the Democratic Progressive Party and appointed the new Minister for Natural Resources, Energy and Environment, which he was until April 26, 2012, after the newly elected President Joyce Banda formed a new government .

Since June 6, 2014, he has been Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Development under President Peter Mutharika . In November 2019 Godall announced the goal of further economic growth - Malawi's economic growth is the strongest in the region - that Malawi should no longer be one of the least developed countries by 2020 .
