Kevin Doherty

Kevin Doherty (born November 6, 1958 in Toronto ) is a former Canadian judoka . In 1981 he was third in the world championship, in 1988 he was fifth in the Olympics.

Athletic career

1979 Doherty fought in the weight class up to 71 kilograms. He became Canadian champion for the first time that year. At the Pan American Games in San Juan in 1979 , he reached the final and won silver behind the Cuban Guillermo D'Nelson May .

In 1980 the 1.78 m tall Doherty moved to the weight class up to 78 kilograms. In this weight class he was Canadian champion from 1981 to 1985 and 1988. At the 1981 World Championships in Maastricht , he defeated Brett Barron from the United States in the quarterfinals and lost in the semifinals to the British Neil Adams . In the battle for bronze he defeated the Mongol Rawdangiin Dawaadalai . In 1982 Doherty won the silver medal at the Pan American Championships behind the Brazilian Arnaldo Mennani . 1983 Doherty retired from the World Championships in Moscow in the round of 16 against the French Jean-Michel Berthet . At the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles Doherty reached the quarter-finals with two wins. After defeats against the German Frank Wieneke and the Japanese Hiromitsu Takano , he finished seventh.

In 1986 Doherty fought in the weight class up to 86 kilograms and was also Canadian champion here. At the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh he won a bronze medal. 1987 Doherty returned to the weight class up to 78 kilograms. At the Olympic Games in Seoul in 1988, he was defeated in the quarterfinals to the Pole Waldemar Legień . After a victory in the hope round against the Argentinean Gastón García Doherty lost the battle for bronze against Bashir Varajew from the Soviet Union.
