Akinwumi Ayodeji Adesina (born February 6, 1960 ) is a Nigerian politician and current President of the African Development Bank (AfEB).

Life

Adesina studied at the Obafemi Awolowo University , where he in 1981 a bachelor's degree in Agricultural Economics ( Agricultural Sciences gained), and then went to Purdue University in the US, where he in 1988 a Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics . In 1988 he won a postdoctoral fellowship from the well-known Rockefeller Foundation , for which he was Deputy Director of Food Security in New York City from 1998 to 2008 .

From 2008 to 2010 he was President of the African Association of Agricultural Economists and Vice-President for Policy and Partnerships of the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa .

He was 2011 to 2015 Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development in Nigeria, during which time he led a reform in the fertilizer sector through, creating a 40-year-old corrupt system was completed by an innovative electronic account ( wallet system ) was introduced on which the farmers received their subsidies directly, which subsequently improved the lives of the 14.5 million farmers. In addition, Nigeria's food production increased by 21 million tons, and the private sector invested US $ 5.6 billion in agriculture.

On May 28, on the anniversary of the member states in Abidjan, he was the first Nigerian to be elected 8th President of the African Development Bank. The office has a legislative period of 5 years and was assumed by Adesina on September 1, 2015. He is striving to be re-elected, but this is overshadowed by allegations from AfEB employees, which were made public by a whistleblower in January 2020, according to which Adesina is said to have violated the code of conduct several times: conflicts of interest with current and former employees, immoral behavior and favoring Nigerian employees and money for Nigeria - an unjustified accusation, because Nigeria and Nigerian employees are underrepresented at the AfEB. Under pressure from Steven Mnuchin of the United States Treasury Department , an independent committee of inquiry will investigate the allegations after the Internal Ethics Committee stated in April that "Mr. Adesina had been fully exonerated of all allegations against him “and the Board of Governors, following this dictum, should acquit Adesina of the allegations.

He is fluent in English and French.
