Büchenberg is a settlement belonging to the town of Oberharz am Brocken , which is named after the mountain of the same name on the border of the county of Wernigerode . Above all, the iron ore mines , which were operated here on one of the largest iron ore deposits in Germany, on six levels and about 40 km of mine section , were known nationwide . The last mine ceased operations in 1970 and is now operated as the Büchenberg Erzgrube show mine .
In a landslide on June 28, 1963, considerable rock masses fell about 20 to 30 meters into the depth of a pinge and endangered, among other things, the Büchenberg forest inn, which was later demolished for safety reasons. There was no personal injury in this incident.
