Books dispute

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The books dispute , also known as the Karl Bücher dispute , was a dispute in the German Empire at the beginning of the 20th century between scientists, scholars and librarians on the one hand, and booksellers and publishers on the other, about the granting of discounts and price reductions ( scientific) books.

The discussions took place in newspapers, scientific journals, books and negotiations, sometimes in very polemical and personal form. The debate reached its climax or escalation in 1903 with the publication of the memorandum “The German Book Trade and Science” by the Leipzig economist Karl Bücher . In it, he accused the booksellers, among other things, of making books more expensive and of forming a cartel by reducing or abolishing discounts and introducing fixed retail prices . The booksellers and, above all, the Börsenverein der Deutschen Buchhandels in Leipzig denied these allegations, journalistically defended themselves against these attacks and were finally able to maintain and enforce fixed book prices.
