Karl-Ernst Jeismann

Karl-Ernst Jeismann (born August 11, 1925 in Dortmund ; † February 25, 2012 in Münster ) was a German historian and history teacher.

Life

Jeismann received his doctorate in 1956 from the Westphalian Wilhelms University of Münster with Kurt von Raumer and completed his habilitation in 1971 at the Ruhr University in Bochum . Since 1966 he taught as a professor at the Pedagogical University of Westphalia-Lippe in Münster. In 1978 he became director of the Georg Eckert Institute for international textbook research in Braunschweig. In 1982 Jeismann went to the University of Münster as professor for history and history didactics , where he retired in 1990.

In 1977 Jeismann emphasized the " historical awareness in society" as the core of the discipline of history didactics, in which almost all professional representatives follow it. It aims at the existing content and thought figures as well as the change of historical ideas as well as the influence of historical consciousness through reason.

Jeismann was one of the representatives of a science- oriented branch of the discipline that subjects its statements to strictly scientific justification. The main task of history teaching is therefore scientific education. Jeismann is directed against fact positivism , one-sided political partisanship and permanent fixation of historical statements without the possibility of revision. Pupils need their own leeway to form judgments , which takes place on the three learning objective levels of analysis, factual judgment and evaluation . This distinction has become the standard. In the 1970s, Jeismann was one of the opponents of the critical-emancipatory direction around Annette Kuhn and Klaus Bergmann .

In an empirical study, Jeismann examined the problem of the division of Germany in the historical consciousness of young people, and also helped to shape the German reading book Wort und Sinn .

In 1972 Jeismann was elected a full member of the Historical Commission for Westphalia . From 2009 he was a corresponding member.
