The Mayor of Vienna chain is the chain of office of the mayor of Vienna . It was worn for the first time by Eduard Uhl in 1883 , but social democratic mayors always refused to use the necklace, which is why it has not been worn since 1945.

On May 24th, 1883, Emperor Franz Joseph I approved the purchase and use of the chains of office for the Mayor of Vienna and his deputy by a very high resolution . The reason for this acquisition was the opening of the new Vienna City Hall on September 12, 1883 as part of the 200th anniversary of the successful repulsion of the second Turkish siege. The chain dedicated to the incumbent mayor Eduard Uhl by the Viennese city council was the first on this day Sometimes and later also borne by his successors.

After the First World War , Jakob Reumann , the first social democratic mayor of Vienna, refused to wear this necklace, as did his also social democratic successor Karl Seitz . During the corporate state , Richard Schmitz wore this chain of mayors again, as did the mayors during the Nazi era . After the Second World War , the again socialist (or social democratic) mayors continued the tradition of their predecessors from the interwar period and did not wear the mayor's chain.
