Eduard Uhl
Eduard Uhl (born December 12, 1813 in Vienna ; † November 1, 1892 ibid) was an Austrian lawyer and mayor of Vienna .
Uhl was first a magistrate from 1832 to 1840 and then a privateer. In 1848 he served as a captain in the National Guard and in 1861 became a member of the Vienna City Council.
In 1882 Uhl was promoted to mayor, an office that he held until 1889. During his tenure, Uhl was particularly committed to the fire and rescue services and the Vienna markets. In 1887 he and several local councilors founded the "Central Association for the Feeding of Poor School Children" in order to offer the poorest schoolchildren a warm lunch in the winter months. Politically, as a liberal, Uhl stood in stark contrast to the Christian-social politician Karl Lueger and the German national camp around Georg von Schönerer . He was a member of the Freemason Lodge Humanitas in (then Hungarian) Neudörfl (today's Burgenland ).
His grave of honor is in the Vienna Central Cemetery (group 14 A, number 27).
In 1894, Uhlplatz in Vienna- Josefstadt (8th district) was named after him.
