Josef Neumayer (born March 17, 1844 in Mariahilf ; † May 25, 1923 in Vienna ) was an Austrian lawyer and Christian social politician and mayor of Vienna from 1910 to 1912 .

Neumayer attended the Josefstädter and the Schottengymnasium and then studied law . From 1873 he worked as a criminal defense attorney , from 1877 as court and court counsel . In 1885 he became the asset manager of the Kaiserin Elisabeth Hospital in Bad Hall .

Politically, Neumayer was originally close to the German Nationals, but then joined Karl Lueger's Christian Social Party . From 1895 to 1918 he was a local councilor, and from May 22, 1896 also Vice Mayor of Vienna. From 1902 he was also a member of the Lower Austrian Landtag. Lueger actually wanted Richard Weiskirchner to be mayor after his death , but as Minister of Commerce he was indispensable, so that Neumayer got a chance. He was sworn in as mayor on May 4, 1910. Due to his increasing hearing loss, he was barely able to exercise his office, which led to severe criticism from the opposition. Since he could not lead the following local council election campaign accordingly, he resigned on December 19, 1912. Then Weiskirchner took over the office.

Josef Neumayer died on May 25, 1923 and is buried in an honorary grave in the Hietzinger Friedhof (group 16, number 45E).
