Bürgerspital (Vienna)
The Viennese Bürgerspital am Schweinemarkt, which was built in the 16th century, was a large building complex that stretched from today's Lobkowitzplatz (formerly: Schweinemarkt ) to Kärntner Strasse .
history
The medieval citizen's hospital in front of the Kärntner Tor , which had grown into a stately complex of buildings over the centuries through donations and bequests, had to be demolished in 1529 for strategic reasons in view of the impending Turkish siege . The inmates were relocated to the practically empty Clara Monastery of the Poor Clares on the pig market, the residents of which had mostly fled from the threat of war. In 1530, after successfully surviving the siege, Archduke Ferdinand donated the nunnery to the city of Vienna, which dedicated it to hospital purposes and as a care home. The complex was gradually expanded and raised. It accommodated up to 3000 people.
Between 1783 and 1790, the complex was turned into an apartment building with 10 courtyards, 20 staircases and 220 apartments, in which numerous artists from the Kärntnertortheater also lived. The previous residents were moved to the Sankt Marx supply house , the orphans to the orphanage on Rennweg . The significant income from the Bürgerspital apartment building benefited the Bürgerspitalfonds.
In December 1873, associated with demolition work began rebuilding the civil hospital, in the framework of Cecilia alley abandoned, which in 1861 (by the deceased on July 24, 1861 Cecilia Kunz has come) to the City of Vienna Maria and Cecilia Kunz's Foundation House (old: 1040 Komödiengasse, new : Cäciliengasse 4) and Maysedergasse (as an extension of Krugerstraße ) was created.
By 1883, the entire complex including the church was demolished by the Allgemeine Österreichische Baugesellschaft (today Porr ) and replaced by new buildings from the Wilhelminian era such as the Kärntner Hof , the Philipphof and the Riunione Adriatica building.
