The Bürgerspital Weingut in Würzburg is a winery in Franconia . The classic grape varieties Riesling , Silvaner and Burgunder are mainly grown on 120 hectares of vineyards . The wines produced are from the Würzburger Stein and Stein-Harp vineyards . The typical Franconian wine bottle, the Bocksbeutel , was also first filled in the Bürgerspital. The winery itself is part of the Bürgerspital zum Hl. Geist Foundation, whose original purpose of the foundation, the reception of people in need of care, has been continued to this day. With every bottle of wine sold, the foundation's social commitment is supported.

The Bürgerspital is a founding member of the Association of German Predicate and Quality Wineries (VDP).

history

In 1316 the Würzburg patrician Johannes von Steren donated a house (today the Bürgerspital-Kirche) at the gates of the city of Würzburg to care for infirmities. In 1321 the first vineyards in today's Sanderau and Lindlein were donated by the von Steren family.

Initially, the wines served to meet their own needs. In 1589 the hospital residents, men and women, were given a measure (1.22 liters) of wine every day. If the residents behaved insubordinately, the hospital mixed them with water as a punishment. If the impropriety went too far, the wine ration was canceled. Soon the citizen hospital financed its charitable ventures from the vine yields, agriculture and asset management.

750 senior citizens now live in the eight residential and nursing homes.

Locations

As one of the oldest wine-growing foundations in the world, the Bürgerspital is equipped with several vineyards. The Bürgerspital not only owns vineyards on the 30 hectares of the well-known Würzburger Stein and the Würzburger Stein-Harp - wholly owned by the Bürgerspital - but also on the Würzburger Innere Leiste, Würzburger Pfaffenberg, Würzburger Abtsleite and Randersackerer Teufelskeller vineyards. In the Würzburger Stein vineyard, the Bürgerspital winery only grows classic grape varieties from the region. The extraordinary microclimate - due to the rare constellation of slope inclination, slope direction, terrain and proximity to the river - offers optimal conditions. The geological raw material shell limestone shapes the distinctive character of the stone wines. In the center of the Würzburger Stein is the Würzburger Stein Harp, which is owned by the Citizens Hospital.

deals

In the Bürgerspital Weinhaus under the Glockenspiel (corner of Theaterstrasse and Semmelstrasse), various institutions are united: the classic shop selling wine, a vinotheque - in summer with a vineyard in front of the Spitalkirche - and the Hockerle, a meeting point with bottles of wine. The Bürgerspital Weinstuben are also located in the foundation's main buildings (between Semmelstrasse, Theaterstrasse and Ludwigstrasse). The Bürgerspital winery also offers cellar tours with wine tasting.
