The existence of a brewery in Velké Březno has been documented by a purchase agreement since 1606. In 1753, Count Ferdinand Bonaventura von Harrach built a Meierhof and the "Großpriesener" brewery. Around 1900 the brewery produced 18 types of beer. In 1907 she sold 77,000 hectoliters in the USA, Africa, South America and Europe. In 1910 the brewery was a supplier to the British House of Lords . In 1942 she supplied beer for Erwin Rommel's Africa Corps . In 1945 the brewery was confiscated and placed under national administration. In 1992, after the collapse of the socialist economic and social systems, privatization took place. In 1998 the brewery was taken over by Drinks Union AG. Since 2003, around 200,000 hl of draft, lager and specialty beers have been produced and sold every year. In 2017 a new bottle label and crown cap design was introduced.

In 2002 Březňák was awarded the title Beer of the Czech Republic among light beers .

Viktor Cibich

Viktor Cibich

Viktor Cibich (also Victor Cibich , born December 11, 1856 in Hustopeče (German Auspitz ), † January 25, 1916 in Velké Březno) was station master in Großpriesen (today: Velké Březno) and a beer lover. In 1906 he allowed the brewery in Großpriesen to use his portrait for advertising purposes. His image still appears on Březňák beer labels, glasses and advertising materials to this day. As compensation, Cibich received a lifelong "pension" in the form of 30 beers per week in the Tivoli restaurant in Großpriesen - probably one of the first advertising contracts.

Since the label's trademark expired in the late 1940s , other breweries in different countries have also used its image. It is assumed that it is the most frequently depicted from the area of today's Czech Republic with an estimated 2.5 billion picture copies.
