BBC Radio Scotland

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

BBC Radio Scotland is an English language radio program for Scotland and is produced by BBC Scotland based in Glasgow. It should not be confused with the Gaelic language BBC Radio nan Gàidheal .

The station was originally a regional program of the nationwide broadcast BBC Radio 4 and was expanded to a full program in November 1978. Until the early 1990s, a program was only produced during the day, as the medium-wave transmitters were needed as filling stations for BBC Radio 4 during the night. Today the program is broadcast 19 hours a day, at night the program is taken over by BBC Radio 5 Live . It is an entertainment program with news and music with a special focus on sports coverage of the Scottish leagues.

In addition to the main program, there are two regionalizations, BBC Radio Orkney for the Orkney Islands and BBC Radio Shetland for the Shetland Islands . These regional programs each broadcast their own program for half an hour and take over the program of BBC Radio Scotland for the rest of the time.

BBC Radio Scotland can be received extensively on VHF in Scotland. In addition, the station can also be received on medium wave ( Burghead and Westerglen 810 kHz as well as filling stations in Redmoss and Dumfries ). The programs on VHF and medium wave are still occasionally switched today, for example for live broadcasts from the Scottish Parliament .
