The vehicles of the BDŽ series 05 01–03 (later series 81 01–03 ) were four-axle diesel-mechanical railcars for the narrow-gauge railways of the Bulgarian state railway Balgarski Darschawni Schelesnizi (BDŽ) designed with Bosnian gauge .

history

Since there were many tunnels on the Rhodope Railway, the exhaust gases from the locomotives naturally also caused great nuisance for the staff and travelers when driving uphill. Therefore, in the year it opened in 1939 , the BDŽ decided to procure diesel multiple units to improve comfort.

In 1941 three railcars were delivered, in addition to which three sidecars with a seating capacity of 62 were purchased. Seven similar railcars had already been delivered to the Yugoslav Railways in 1938 as class 801 for the local narrow-gauge network . The railcars were only used on the Rhodope Railway. In 1952, four additional BDŽ class 05 04-07 multiple units with increased performance were ordered. Secure operations can only be taken from the vehicles from 1969, when the first railcar, now known as 81-01 , covered the connection between Varvara and Pazardzhik six times a day . Much earlier, in 1963, railcar 81-03 had already been taken out of service. After the appearance of the new 75 series , the vehicles were not relocated to Červen Brjag like the 82 series , but remained in Septemwri . The retirement took place in 1973 ( 81-01 ) and 1975 ( 81-02 ). Another sign of life cannot be found from the vehicles. Since they were stationed in Septemwri until they were retired, the photo taken in 2015 could be from a sidecar from prewar production.

The vehicles were optimally designed for the conditions of the Rhodope Railway as mountain railcars with the most favorable friction weight (identical to the service weight). For narrow-gauge conditions, they were designed to be quite large, significantly larger than the well-known narrow-gauge railcars DR 137 322 to 325 , which they towered over by three meters. But they had about the same number of seats as this series.

In the steel frame car body, the wooden slatted seats were placed on one side and the machinery on the other. Where the diesel engine was located, there was a baggage and cargo compartment. The cargo compartment was closed with a middle folding door, the entrances for the passengers were via the end doors of the railcar. The entry rooms were the workplaces for the train driver, on the unneeded side the control elements could be closed by roller blinds. The sidecars were designed in a similar way, with no load compartments or central doors. But they had a significantly higher capacity with 62 seats.

It is known about the machine system that the Ganz VI IaT 170/240 engine had an output of 220 hp and the power transmission was mechanical. The engine delivered its torque to the mechanical four-speed gearbox located exactly in the middle of the car, from which both bogie wheels were driven via cardan shafts. This arrangement gave the railcars an extremely high frictional weight that made them suitable for every situation on the mountain railway. When they were delivered, the vehicles had a very modern silver-gray paintwork. Later some vehicles were also painted blue in the lower half and white in the upper half. It is not known whether vehicles of this series are also available, all known photos with vehicles from the 81 series are painted silver-gray.
