Bernama ( Malay Berita Nasional Malaysia ) is the state news agency of the State of Malaysia . It was brought into being on the basis of a parliamentary resolution from 1967 and started work a year later. In March 1998 an additional website was launched; in September BERNAMA TV .

The news agency is subordinate to the Ministry of Communication and Multimedia and has its headquarters in the capital Kuala Lumpur . It is also represented in all Malaysian states and has branches in Washington, London, Manila, New Delhi, Dhaka, Melbourne and Vancouver. Rapporteurs also work in Singapore and the Indonesian capital Jakarta.

The news agency is managed by a board of governors , which consists of a chairman and a maximum of six representatives from Malaysian newspapers and the federal government. A five-member Supervisory Council appointed by the Malaysian head of state ( Yang di-Pertuan Agong ) is to ensure, among other things, objective reporting. This body consists of a judge from the Supreme Court, a representative of the government, a representative of the newspaper industry, the vice-chancellor of any university in Malaysia and one other person.

It is noteworthy that the newspapers are held directly or indirectly by individual members of the Barisan Nasional political coalition . This leads to a clear influence (control) of Barisan Nasional also with Bernama. Again and again there are publications by Bernama, which in more democratic countries are only published in this form by the press office of the respective party. All in all, Bernama also helps to ensure that Malay citizens are primarily provided with censored or government-friendly information.

Bernama has the exclusive rights to distribute economic data, news images and other material through the print media.
