Statutory health insurance was introduced in Germany in 1884. In 1888, the BKK Herkules was founded as BKK Wegmann & Co. by Wegmann & Co. in Kassel.
In the year it was founded, 520 people were insured with BKK Wegmann; the contribution at that time was 3% of the wages. Gradually, more and more services were included in the statutes. Already before 1930 z. B. Treatment costs for family members covered without an additional contribution, which meant a considerable social advance ( family insurance ).
In May 1945, 336 people were insured with BKK Wegmann, the contribution rate was 4.5% of wages. In contrast to today, two thirds of the health insurance contributions were paid by the members and one third by the employer. At the end of 1945 615 people were insured.
In 2001, BKK Wegmann changed its name to BKK Herkules and has since been a company health insurance fund open for Bavaria, Hesse and Lower Saxony (place of residence or employment).
As of December 31, 2013, BKK Herkules had 23,968 members and 9,860 co-insured family members and employed 64 people including five trainees, minus the trainees, this corresponds to the full-time equivalent of 46 employees.
