The Ce 4/4 1 was a four - axle meter-gauge railcar that was used as a single vehicle on the Biel-Meinisberg-Bahn (BMB) and later on the Lugano-Cadro-Dino-Bahn (LCD). Its orange-white paintwork earned it the name Orange Arrow , based on the Red Arrow of the SBB and the Blue Arrow of the BLS .

history

After the electrification, the BMB no longer had its own vehicles; the route was also operated by the Biel city tram . In 1936 the company decided to operate the route again itself and procured a single light railcar for it. The Ce 4/4 1 was developed in 1937 by the Swiss Industrial Society (SIG) and Brown, Boveri & Cie. (BBC) built for the Biel-Meinisberg Railway. The vehicle was henceforth the only vehicle of the BMB and was used as a lone driver on the route until it was closed in 1940. In 1941 the vehicle came to the LCD in Ticino , where it was given the number 10. It was in use there until 1970 and was canceled in 1972.

technology

As a novelty for an overland vehicle, the railcar had simplex bogies , which allowed smaller wheel diameters and thus enabled a low-lying floor. It was similar to the later Swiss standard trams, but as a railcar for an overland railway, unlike the tram, it had no rubber-sprung wheels.

The car body with the two end driver's cabs was built by SIG. Due to the lightweight construction , the railcar weighed only 13.5 t, which was comparable to the conventional two-axle tramway cars of the time.

The electrical equipment was from the BBC. A single pantograph with a carbon collector was attached to the roof . Each bogie had a single longitudinally installed traction motor that drove the two axles of the bogie via angular gears. The motors were connected in series during the approach, in parallel at higher speeds. The resistance brake was used as the service brake , the handbrake was only used to secure the vehicle against rolling away.

The interior had 36 seats, which were covered with synthetic leather. The interior was heated with an electric warm air heater.
