Club development

BSG Empor Gera

The VfL 1990 can be traced back to two company sports associations (BSG) that existed in the time of the GDR . At the beginning of the 1950s, the Gera trade facilities maintained the BSG Empor Gera. As usual, several sports sections belonged to it, of which soccer and roller skating attracted the greatest attention. Between 1950 and 1956 Empor Gera was five times GDR roller hockey champion . In the 1960s, however, roller skating was outsourced to other company sports clubs. During its existence, the soccer section never reached the level of the third or fourth class district league .

BSG Electronics Gera

In 1973 the carrier company changed , the BSG was taken over by the Gera capacitors and got a new name with BSG Elektronik Gera. The BSG Electronics initially made a name for itself in cycling, the future professional cyclist Jens Heppner began his career here. In football, Elektronik Gera was still in the shadow of more successful Gera teams. It was not until 1988 that he was promoted to the third-class district league Gera, with the help of the former Gera and Jena league player Michael Strempel . In 1989 BSG Elektronik won the soccer district cup and thus qualified for the GDR-wide FDGB soccer cup competition . In the first round, the Gera team had to face the second division Robotron Sömmerda at home and after a 1: 2 defeat they were immediately eliminated from the cup competition. In those years the club established itself as the number two in the city behind the BSG Wismut Gera , ahead of SG Dynamo Gera , ASG Vorwärts Gera and BSG Modedruck Gera .

Split into VfL 1990 and FC Blau-Weiß Gera

After the political change in 1989, the electronics factory stopped supporting the BSG. In order to be able to continue the numerous sports, BSG members founded the registered association VfL 1990 Gera in the summer of 1990, which was added to the register of associations on August 20, 1990. The VfL continued most of the previous sports, but focused on popular and popular sports. The football department decided on August 15, 1990 for independence and founded the club FC Blau-Weiß Gera . This then also took the right to play in the new regional league Thuringia for the 1990/91 season. Despite a third place, the league could not be held due to the loss of support from the electronics factory, which has now been converted into a GmbH, and the club withdrew the team to the district league after only one season. This was followed by several descents and ascents again. In 2007, the FC Blau-Weiß merged with the 1. SV Gera and the Geraer KFC Dynamos to form FV Gera-Süd, today BSG Wismut Gera , and brought the division into the Thuringia regional class (7th league) in the merger. The soccer department of VfL 1990 Gera has never been promoted to higher leagues beyond the district game classes.
