There are only three photos of the BaH synagogue in Medschybisch in the Ukrainian Oblast of Khmelnytskyi , and little else is known about them. It was also known as the Old Synagogue and Sirkes Schul .

history

The synagogue was built before 1612. The name results from the first letters of the book Bait Hadasch (New House) by Rabbi Joel Serkes , who was also known by the acronym BaH . The Jewish community in Medschybisch was one of the oldest in the area of today's Ukraine with first written mentions from 1509.

The synagogue was set on fire by the German occupiers during World War II . The remains were removed in 1950. Today only the exposed foundation walls can be seen.

architecture

The main hall was rectangular with a wooden ceiling. It was covered with a hipped roof. On the (longer) north and south sides there were three high pointed arch windows , as well as two on the east side, where there was a round window ( oculus ) between them. Nothing is known of windows for the west side.

Presumably there was a two-story extension with the vestibule and above it the gallery with the women's prayer room. It is not known whether this was an original part of the building or a later extension.

The Torah shrine that can be seen in one of the photos was probably from the late 18th or early 19th century.

Nothing is known about the Bima .
