Baade is an impact crater near the southwestern edge of the moon on the front of the moon, southwest of the gigantic impact basin of the Mare Orientale . Graff crater is visible to the northwest and Catalán crater to the west . The area east of the crater forms the connection between the 280 km long Vallis Bouvard in the north and the narrower, 160 km long Vallis Baade in the south-southeast direction. Both valleys radiate from the Mare in a south-easterly direction.

Baade is essentially circular, with sharp-edged outer walls and partially terraced inner walls. The interior of the crater is rough and irregular and, with a generally bowl-shaped appearance, has no clearly defined crater floor. A central elevation in the center is missing and the entire crater shows no significant traces of erosion due to later impacts.

The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1964 after the German astronomer Walter Baade .
