The Babīte Lake ( Latvian : Babītes ezers ) is a large lake in Latvia about 25 km west of the capital Riga .
geography
The shallow lagoon lake runs parallel to the lower reaches of the Lielupe (German: Kurländische Aa). The tributaries are Gate, Dzilnupe and Neriņa. The only island in the lake has an area of 27 hectares. Since the 19th century, the outflow into the Lielupe has been relocated further east several times by building canals. Since the construction of the Varkaļi Canal in 1988, the flow has been guaranteed along the entire length of the lake.
history
In the 13th century, there was a castle on the north bank of Lake Babīte, which was named "Castrum Babat" in the documents. There the zones of influence of the city of Riga and the Diocese of Zemgallia met .
Flora and fauna
Flat areas are overgrown with reeds .
17 different fish species have been identified in the lake. For migratory birds , the lake has an important function as a place of collection and transit. Most of the lake is under nature protection.
