Bab-al-Silsila minaret

The Bab-al-Silsila Minaret or Bab-as-Silsila Minaret ( Arabic مئذنة باب السلسلة, DMG Miʾḏanat Bāb as-Silsila ; formerly also Al-Mahkama minaret) is one of the four minarets on the Temple Mount in the old city of Jerusalem , which all belong to the al-Aqsa mosque .

The minaret

The Bab-as-Silsila minaret (roughly: "Chain Gate Minaret"), on the western side of the Temple Mount site, was built of stone in 1329 in Syrian style, probably on the site of an older minaret, and has a square foundation. It was given a new top in the 19th century after an earthquake damaged the top; this was later replaced by a smooth square drum and a semicircular dome. The current canopy and lead sheath on the dome were added during the 1923-1924 restoration. The date of the construction of the minaret (730 AH of the Islamic calendar, i.e. 1329 AD ) appears in an inscription on the east side of the foundation: "In the name of Allah, Most Merciful, Compassionate. The palace was built in 730 by Sultan al-Malik al -Nasir arranged ".

At the beginning of the 16th century, the minaret was reserved for the best muezzins , i.e. the criminals, reciters: here the adhān was called first, then the other minarets followed.
