Babak Khalatbari

Babak Khalatbari (* 1975 in Witten ) is a German political scientist. He studied at the Universities of Münster, Cologne and Kuwait. His academic focus includes the Middle East with a special focus on the Persian Arabian Gulf region as well as Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Life

Khalatbari was born in 1975 in Witten an der Ruhr in North Rhine-Westphalia. After graduating from high school, he did his military service with tank battalion 203 in Hemer and in Shilo, Canada. After completing his master's degree, he gained professional experience in Germany, Saudi Arabia and North Africa. During his doctorate, he completed the Basic Training Course for the Deployment of Civilian Personnel in International Peace Operations (ZIF), Foreign Office and completed this course in 2003. In 2004, the University of Münster awarded him a doctorate for his doctorate on Euro-Mediterranean relations. phil. Khalatbari did his PhD with Reinhard Meyers and Wichard Woyke .

In 2005, Khalatbari headed the Konrad Adenauer Foundation's office in Kabul, Afghanistan. From 2008 to 2013 he also heads the office of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation in Pakistan. In August 2006 Khalatbari received a medal for excellence from ISAF Deputy Commander, Major General Hans-Werner Ahrens , for his services in Afghanistan in the field of civil-military relations. In 2006, Khalatbari was a member of the then ad-hoc Afghanistan working group of the CDU / CSU parliamentary group . In November 2010 he acted as their expert at the public hearing of the Foreign Affairs Committee on the subject: "Criteria for evaluating the Afghanistan mission". On October 28, 2010, during a symposium of the Federal Intelligence Service in the panel "Reconstruction in the tenth year - lessons", he described the grievances in the political sector in Afghanistan. In his opinion, an electoral reform combined with a new voter registration are urgently advised. An honest inventory can be summed up with an Afghan saying: "Sooner or later a building will collapse if the first stone is set incorrectly." It must therefore be improved in this sector to prevent a possible system collapse. Khalatbari publishes regularly on Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iran as well as on the Taliban movement and terrorism. Khalatbari has been working in the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) since 2013 . In 2016 he was part of " Operation Sophia ", a mission that cracks down on smugglers and rescues refugees from distress at sea.
