Hans-Werner Ahrens

Hans-Werner Ahrens (born June 24, 1948 in Boizenburg / Elbe ) is a former German major general in the Air Force and was the last commander of the Air Transport Command (LTKdo) in Münster from 2005 to 2010 .

Life

Hans-Werner Ahrens joined the Air Force in 1967 and completed his officer training by 1973, followed by training as a transport pilot at the Lufthansa Commercial Aviation School in Bremen . He was then transferred to Air Transport Wing 63 in Hohn near Rendsburg .

From 1979 to 1981 he took part in the 24th general staff course at the command academy of the Bundeswehr in Hamburg and then became an A3 general staff officer in the command group at the academy. In 1984 he took over the training squadron of Air Transport Wing 62 in Wunstorf near Hanover as a squadron captain . As early as 1985 he moved to Münster in the air transport command as head of the A3b division. In 1987 Ahrens joined the air force command in the Federal Ministry of Defense in Bonn , and from 1989 to 1993 he went to Brunssum in the Netherlands as a personal staff officer at the Allied Joint Force Command under the German generals Hans-Henning von Sandrart and Henning von Ondarza .

From 1993 to 1995 Ahrens headed the Air Transport Squadron 62 as commodore , which was involved in the airlift to Sarajevo in Bosnia during this time . He then became head of the liaison command between the Air Force and the Army Command in Koblenz . During his time in Koblenz, he was also temporarily head of the staff of the German military representative at the IFOR / SFOR headquarters in Sarajevo.

Service in the rank of general

From 1997 to 2005 Ahrens was employed intermittently in the United Kingdom, initially as a liaison officer at the Permanent Joint Headquarters in Northwood, and from 2002 as a military attaché in London. During this time he was promoted to brigadier general. From 2000 to 2002 he was Head of Unit in the Ministry of Defense. After his return, Ahrens was appointed commander of the air transport command on June 1, 2005. He held this post until the command was dissolved on June 30, 2010, after which he was retired. From February to August 2006 Ahrens was also Deputy Commander ( Deputy Commander , DCOM) of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan used.
