Babyrousa bolabatuensis is a supposedly extinct species of the deer boar (genus Babyrousa ). She still inhabited the southwest of the island of Sulawesi in the Holocene. A single find suggests that the species in the central part of Sulawesi could have survived to this day.
features
Since the species is only known from bone finds, statements on the characteristics are only possible to a limited extent. Measurements of the teeth showed similarities with the Moluccan deer boar .
distribution
The species still inhabited southern Sulawesi in the Holocene . Here, subfossil remains are known from the Bola Batu caves near Watampone . A single skull found a few years ago in the central part of the island, near Kulawi , could be attributed to this shape and indicates that the species may still exist.
Way of life
Nothing is known about the way of life. It can be assumed that the animals, like other deer boars, lived in rainforest areas and ate an omnivorous diet.
Systematics
This boar was originally described as a subspecies of Babyrousa bayrussa , the species that originally included all boar . It was later divided into several species, including B. bolabatuensis .
