The Bachhaus on Weimarer Markt was a house in which the composer Johann Sebastian Bach († 1750) lived between 1708 and 1717.

history

18th century

From 1708 to 1717 Johann Sebastian Bach lived in the Renaissance building together with his wife Maria Barbara Bach and his sister-in-law. Many of his organ pieces, over 30 cantatas, a number of works for solo harpsichord, solo partitas for violin, early versions of the Brandenburg Concerts , etc. were created here, etc. Bach's children Wilhelm Friedemann and Carl Philipp Emanuel were born in Weimar .

19th century

In 1803 Theodor Johann Michael Braun, the landlord of the neighboring inn "Zum Erbprinzen", bought the building. The fronts of both houses were given a uniform classical facade. Famous composers and musicians, such as B. Franz Liszt , Richard Wagner and Hector Berlioz , stayed in the inn without realizing that the eastern part of the building was Bach's former home.

20th century

Karl Bechstein, a Weimar historian, proved the location of Bach's house in the 1920s. In 1939 the Bachstube was set up on the eastern ground floor of the Hotel “Zum Erbprinzen”. This wine bar was decorated with portraits of Johann Sebastian, Wilhelm Friedemann and Carl Philipp Emmanuel Bach. It was considered the first Weimar Bach memorial and was located directly above the wine cellars of that time.

In 1945 Allied bombers severely damaged the eastern part of the “Zum Erbprinzen” hotel, which also housed the Bachstube. A short time later it was rebuilt as a dining room for the officers of the Red Army. The hotel and Bachstube continued to operate until around 1969. The building then fell into disrepair.

In the winter of 1989/90, the building was demolished amid protests by monument conservationists. The historic cellar vaults and parts of the ground floor facade have been preserved.

21st century

A part of the area under which the Bach wine and beer cellar is located is now used as a parking lot by guests of the Hotel Elephant . The Bach in Weimar eV association was founded in 2006 , whose primary goals are to strengthen the public awareness of Weimar as a Bach city and to build a “ New Bach House Weimar ” at the previous location, above the historic cellar vault. This reconstruction is intended to serve as a Bach memorial and place of identification. This intention has so far failed due to the resistance of the Schörghuber group of companies .

Since February 7, 2014 it has been possible to sign an online petition for a Bachhaus in Weimar, which is available in several languages. Prominent signatories include Günter Blobel and JM Coetzee . Myriam Eichberger, the chairwoman of the association, wrote a petition letter addressed to the Minister of State for Culture, Monika Grütters .
