Bach Chapel St. Florian

The Bachkapelle St. Florian is a listed chapel ( list entry ) in the municipality of Matrei in East Tyrol . The chapel was built in 1611 and has a high-quality, baroque inventory.

location

St. Florian is located in the northern area of Matreier Markt on the way to the Klaunzerberg on the left bank of the Bretterwandbach . It is located on Grabenweg directly next to the Marstallweg 20 house. A small green area has been created around the chapel, which is bordered by a picket fence.

history

The building was built in 1611 as a votive chapel against the risk of storms, fire and flooding. Around the end of the 17th century an extension took place, in 1799 the roof was re-covered. After a restoration between 1978 and 1982, the chapel was rededicated in 1982. The wall fresco on the entrance facade was deliberately destroyed in 1959 and after being whitewashed it was exposed and restored in the 1980s.

Exterior construction

The chapel was built over a rectangular floor plan and has a round apse. It also has a steep, shingle-covered gable roof with a profiled cove and a small roof turret over the entrance. The roof turret with two arched sound windows and an onion hood is crowned by a ball, cross and weather valve. The entrance to the chapel is on the west side and faces the valley, with entry to the chapel through a round arched portal. The portal is flanked by two almost square viewing windows with wrought iron bars. Above it is a monumental wall fresco by Franz Walchegger . The fresco shows the protective cloak Madonna with the cloak spread over the donor of the chapel and the district on Bretterwandbach, together with two angels and a mountain landscape in the background. The longitudinal walls each have two flat-arched closed rectangular windows.

Interior and equipment

The ceiling of the chapel was designed as a flat barrel vault with stucco decoration. The chapel apse was highlighted by a shell cone. On the entrance side there is a protruding wooden gallery. The interior is dominated by a baroque altar, which was probably created by Andreas Tamasch from Stams at the end of the 17th century. It is made of wood and has a marble frame with pink-green veining and ornamental gilding. In the center of the altar there is a figural representation of the Pietà , which is flanked by figures of St. George and St. Florian. Next to the altar there are wooden choir stalls on the north and south walls and wooden prayer chairs in the nave. The Way of the Cross consists of colored engravings from the second half of the 19th century, the chapel also has two lecture poles with candlestick angels , a wooden, gold-plated lecture cross that was probably created in the middle of the 18th century and a partially silvered Holy Spirit Dove in the choir arch.
