Bactoprenol (undecaprenol) in the form of its diphosphate is a lipid carrier (C 50 to C 60 isoprenoid alcohol) that is bound to the cytoplasmic membrane of bacteria .
Its function is that the sugar intermediates are made sufficiently hydrophobic during the synthesis of peptidoglycan so that they can be channeled through the cytoplasmic membrane ("flipping"). Characterized that is disaccharide - pentapeptide transported in the peptidoglycan network to the outside, where the installation takes place. The lipid carrier jumps back into the cytoplasm and takes up a disaccharide pentapeptide again.
This passage of sugar intermediates can also be inhibited by antibiotics such as bacitracin , which can be produced by some species of Bacillus.
